Attendance Policies

Attendance

Students are expected to be at school every day so they do not miss valuable instructional time.

If your child is going to be absent please call the Academy before 9:00 AM. Parents are asked to send a written note with the child the next school day. The note must include:

  • student’s name
  • date absent
  • reason for absence from school
  • parent’s signature, and
  • telephone number where parent can be reached

Parents must contact the school and send a note for the absence to be excused.

Excused absences may be granted for the following reasons:

  1. Illness of the student. A doctor or dentist statement is required. A statement of illness must be presented if a student is absent more than three consecutive days or more than ten total absences.
  2. Illness in the immediate family, which requires absence of the student from school.
  3. Death in the immediate family (should not exceed five days).
  4. Religious holidays regularly observed by persons of the student’s faith. A statement from the minister or other person recognized by the religious group may be required.
  5. Absences for other reasons as approved by the Principal upon request of the parent.

A student who is absent for ten consecutive days will be withdrawn from the Academy unless the parent or guardian has given advance notice to the Principal and the Principal has granted approval.

A student who has more than twelve unexcused absences will not be promoted to the next grade unless the student demonstrates “on grade level knowledge” on an external criterion referenced test that measures State Grade Level Content Expectations or the parent and student have entered an Attendance Intervention Plan and the family corrects the attendance problem and demonstrates on grade level achievement.

Late Arrival

Students will be marked tardy if they arrive after the school day begins at 8:15 AM. A tardy student must report to the office upon arrival with an adult to receive a tardy slip for admittance to class. A student who is tardy three times will receive a warning letter sent home to the parents for the parent’s signature. Nine tardies will result in a one-day suspension from school.

There are times when a deviation from a student’s normal school schedule is necessary. Tardiness will be excused under the following circumstances:

  • Medical appointments (accompanied by a written doctor’s notice)
  • Death in the family
  • Legally required presence at a court proceeding
  • School-sponsored extra-curricular activities
  • Religious observations
  • Severe weather, fires, family tragedies
